چکیده

A 52-year-old man presented with signs of a right middle cerebral artery stroke. A large pulsatile mass was noted at the right base of his neck, together with an overlying scar which the patient reported as being due to a stab wound sustained 22 years ago (Fig. 1). A computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain showed an infarct in the area of the right middle cerebral artery (Fig. 2). Computed tomographic angiography revealed a pseudo-aneurysm of the right common carotid artery at its origin with extensive surrounding thrombus (Fig. 3), as well as paucity of branches of the right middle cerebral artery (Fig. 4). Definitive management of the pseudoaneurysm was achieved by vascular surgical intervention.

Protective Effect of Delayed Ischemic Postconditioning on Embolic Stroke Complications in Female Rat

Background & Aims: Ischemic postconditioning, conducted by a series of brief occlusion and release of the bilateral common carotid arteries, has neuroprotective properties in permanent or transient models of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion but its delayed neuroprotective effects in the embolic model of stroke, especially in female rat, have not yet been reported and were investigated ...

Cardioembolic stroke from atrial septal aneurysm.

Atrial septal aneurysm is an uncommon occult cardiac source of cerebral embolism. It is usually asymptomatic, and clinical cardiologic examination and electrocardiography fail to reveal its presence. We report a case of a 34-year-old woman with sudden right hemiplegia and aphasia from occlusion of the left carotid siphon in whom an atrial septal aneurysm was detected by two-dimensional echocard...

ANGIOPLASTY AND STENTING OF CAROTID ARTERY STENOSIS WITH EMBOLIC PROTECTION DEVICES

Background: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has recently been recommended as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) by some clinicians. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the success rate and in-hospital and 30-day adverse events in our first experiences in Iran for CAS with protection devices, to document our results and guide further use of CAS. Methods: From December 2...

Emergency Excision of Cardiac Myxoma and Endovascular Coiling of Intracranial Aneurysm after Cerebral Infarction

Cardiac myxoma is the most common primary tumor of the heart, located mainly in the left atrium. Cerebral embolization or intracranial aneurysm formation as a consequence of left atrial myxomas has been well documented, whereas myxoma embolization causing the combination of cerebral infarction and intracranial myxomatous aneurysm is rare. We report herein, a 67-year-old female with a cardiac my...

Clinical application of asymptomatic embolic signal detection in acute stroke: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The detection of asymptomatic embolization with the use of Doppler ultrasound has a number of potential applications in patients with acute stroke. It may provide information on the stroke pathogenesis in individual cases, identify patients with continued embolization, and allow localization of the active embolic source. METHODS We recruited 119 patients with acute ante...
